What To Do First Once You’re Engaged, Part II

Earlier this week I talked you through the first 5 things you should do once you’re engaged. If you missed it, you can read it here. Today, I’m following up with the next 5 things you should do.

Discuss your priorities. One of the questions I ask Bespoken Brides is, “What are your top 3 priorities?” Is photography a priority? Food? Music? Flowers & Decor? Nailing down your top 3 priorities will help you stay focused. It will help you decide where to splurge in your wedding budget. It will help you even choose a wedding date. If having an outdoor wedding is a priority, then setting a date in the winter may not be your best bet.


Envision your wedding. What have you always pictured your wedding to look like since you were a little girl? Are you a traditionalist? Or are you trendy? This is the time to consider what you want – and what you don’t want – in your wedding. Get the big picture.


Invite your bridal party to play a special role in your big day. Go ahead and figure out who you want standing by your side on such a special occasion, and ask them to play a part. Maid of Honor, Matron of Honor, Bridesmaids, Best Man, Groomsmen, Flower Girls, Ring Bearers…go ahead and ask them! They’re already going to be excited for you!


Start your registry. As soon as people hear that you are engaged, they are going to want to know where you are registered. Registering can be overwhelming, so take it slow, and enjoy the process. You may want to check out my Ultimate Wedding Registry Guide series.


Create an email that is dedicated specifically to all things wedding. You will likely sign up for wedding email lists, discount lists, vendor lists, etc. during the planning process. No one likes their personal email account flooded with extras. Save yourself a headache and create a separate email account (i.e., sarahlovesjosh@email.com, sarahandjoshwedding@email.com) for wedding planning purposes. DO NOT USE YOUR WORK EMAIL ACCOUNT FOR ANYTHING WEDDING-RELATED! Most employers frown upon this, and your job could be at stake if they see you using work to plan your wedding. Make sure you use your newly created email address once you create it! You don’t want to miss any promos or offers. Maybe that venue you’ve been dying to have was booked on your wedding date, but suddenly opened up and the event manager decided to email you instead of call you. You don’t want to miss that!
