One of our most popular blog posts ever has been Why a Wedding Planner is Worth It. And as we are wrapping up what the wedding industry calls “Engagement Season”, and as more and more recently engaged couples are reaching out to us to help plan their wedding, I wanted to pop in and make sure to cover even more reasons why you need to hire a wedding planner.
Regardless of what you decide, you definitely want to hire, at minimum, a wedding coordinator. You want and need to be 100% present on your wedding day, one of the most important days of your life, and if you are busy worrying about whether the centerpieces are placed or if the musicians arrived, you won’t be able to enjoy yourself. Also, while your venue coordinator is extremely helpful, he or she does not substitute a wedding coordinator.
But… you may need to hire a wedding planner who provides more services than just coordination. If you answer “Yes” to any of these questions below, then we highly recommend hiring a wedding planner, not just a coordinator.
Do you work a full-time job?
Planning a wedding is full-time job in and of itself, so if you and your S.O. already work full-time, you may not have any additional time to devote to planning your wedding. Also, most of the professional wedding vendors you hire work normal business hours. That means you will have to take phone calls from them during the day or take time off to be able to to attend meetings with them. If your full-time job does not allow for this, then you need to hire a wedding planner.
Do you have budget concerns? Do you know how much things cost in the wedding industry?
If you have a budget (and everyone has a wedding budget), then you will need to be able to figure out how much things cost so you can maintain your budget. If you are unclear on what your flowers should cost or what your catering should cost, then enlisting in the help of a wedding planner will be super beneficial for you. Wedding planners know what everything costs and can help guide you as you budget for and plan your wedding.
Are you having a short engagement?
If you’re having a short engagement, then you need a wedding planner. It’s totally ok if you don’t want to wait the standard 1 year to 1.5 years to get married (we didn’t!). But if you are going to get married in, say, 6 months or less, then you will benefit from a wedding planner who has experience in planning weddings quickly.
Are you planning a destination wedding?
HEADS-UP: This doesn’t necessarily mean an overseas wedding! Are you considering getting married somewhere other than where you currently live? If so, you want to find a wedding planner who has experience planning weddings in the location you want to exchange vows.
Do you have someone who can give you reliable, professional vendor recommendations?
Hiring the BEST wedding vendors is crucial to your wedding. You want experienced wedding professionals to help pull your wedding off. You want to hire wedding vendors who are within your budget. And each wedding vendor has his or her own contract that you will need to be able to read, understand, and navigate. A wedding planner will be able to recommend professionals and creatives who are reliable, experienced, and fit within your style and budget.
Do you have a clear vision for your wedding day?
If design isn’t your thing, or if your Pinterest board seems to be all over the place, then you want to consider hiring a wedding planner with design services. A designer can help pull your vision together and make sure that what you’re envisioning is cohesive while coming together beautifully.
Are there multiple opinions that you’re trying to navigate? Are you feeling anxiety and stress trying to please everyone?
If you haven’t already figured this out, everyone is going to have an opinion about your wedding and what you should or should not do. If you find yourself stressed and trying to please everyone… OR if you find yourself snapping at your mom or fiancé… then you probably want to consider hiring a wedding planner. While wedding planning stress is expected regardless, a wedding planner can help alleviate this by playing a neutral role and by being the voice of reason.
Do you enjoy planning and hosting parties?
If you don’t even enjoy party planning, or if there’s even the slightest part of you that doesn’t want to plan your own wedding, then we recommend a wedding planner.
Should you hire a wedding planner or a wedding coordinator?
If you realize you need help, but you’re unsure if you need to hire a wedding planner or a wedding coordinator, then FIRST read this article on the differences between the two. Then consider the following points:
You should hire a wedding planner if:
you’re planning a destination wedding.
you don’t even know where to get married.
you work a full-time job and cannot take many calls during the day.
you’re expecting a large number of guests.
you’re having a short engagement.
you’re not so good with money and budgeting.
you cannot envision your wedding or if you don’t even know where to start when it comes to designing your wedding.
you’re not organized and cannot keep up with a checklist.
you have tricky family dynamics to navigate.
planning a wedding sounds dreadful to you.
You should hire a wedding coordinator if:
you love planning parties and have some experience with it.
you’re having a long engagement period.
you have lots of outside help (mom, aunts, bridesmaids, friends) to walk with you through the process.
you’re super detailed and organized.
you’re cool with getting yourself deeply rooted in the planning process without professional help.
