Is she excited for you? Is she explaining herself and her services well?
Compatibility, Personality, and Trust
Out of all of the wedding professionals you hire, you will spend the most time with your wedding planner. Whoever you hire will be working very closely with you through a potentially stressful and overwhelming season of life, so it is IMPERATIVE that you “click” with this person. You’ll also be sharing some sensitive details with this person (personal funds, family details, family drama, etc.), so you want to make sure you feel as though you can trust her. Ask yourself if this is someone you want to spend time with. Is she showing enthusiasm for your ideas and asking lots of questions? Is this someone whom you would feel comfortable sharing private, sensitive information with? Would you feel comfortable voicing concerns, no matter how big or small, with this person? And is this someone who you would want to hold your hand (both metaphorically and potentially physically) on the biggest day of your life? Trust your gut here.
Professionalism and Experience
Even though you want your planner to feel like your new BFF, he or she should also be professional throughout the planning process. Every planner has her own processes and own skill set, as well as their own unique experience. Be sure you are finding a planner who can cater to your priorities. If you love design, color palettes, florals, and want to see a beautiful space transformed, then you want to find a planner who is also a designer. If their portfolios showcase glamorous weddings with grandeur and you’re looking for a small, intimate wedding, then you may need to look for a different planner. When you meet with the planner, find out what vendors they work with. A planner with solid experience will be able to list you vendors they work with without hesitation. And while most planners have a preferred list of vendors they tend to work with, a good planner will be willing and open to hearing your suggestions.
It should go without saying that your wedding planner should be extremely organized and detail-oriented. A good wedding planner will keep track of EVERYTHING, including notes and details from your initial consultation. She’ll keep track of all sent and received emails so she can refer back to them later if needed. She may also send you payment and appointment reminders, as well as check-in with you on a regular basis to see how you’re doing.
A good planner will be very honest with you from the very beginning in regards to not only your budget, but with everything. You want your wedding planner to be like that one assertive friend you have. The one who isn’t afraid to tell you like it is. Communication and Average Response Time
Communication is important in any relationship, including the one you have with your wedding planner. How long will it take your planner to get back to you? Do they take a long time, or are they responding in a reasonable amount of time? A word of note: most planners are busy working Fridays-Sundays for events, and it will be difficult for them to respond during this time (would you want your planner responding to an email in the middle of your wedding?). Because most planners are working on a typical weekend, they may not head back into the office until Tuesday. So give them some grace when it comes to response time…but if they are taking a long time to respond, you may want to move on.
Calm Under Pressure
One of the most important qualities your planner should have is calmness. If you meet with a planner and she seems stressed out, that should raise an immediate red flag. You want to hire a wedding planner who will appear calm even if things aren’t going as planned.
